The Ship Inn - Holy Island of Lindisfarne

There has been a public house located on this part of the island for several hundred years. Formerly called the Northumberland Arms it was during 1995 that a major renovation programme was undertaken and the business was renamed as The Ship Inn, although the Islanders still affectionately refer to the pub as "The Tavern".

The inn a “free house” is situated in the area of Holy Island known as Marygate, which is perfectly located for those seeking out Lindisfarne Castle or the harbour. Since September 2005 the inn has been under the ownership of Andrew & Janice Hnat who proudly maintain the high standards which have earned the inn a 4 star hotel rated English Tourist Council award. Whether locals, tourists or the casual “passer by” the inn offers a warm welcome whether to sample its traditional ales, wines & spirits or good home cooked food, .

As you enter The Ship Inn the bar area has an ambience that perfectly portrays an atmosphere akin to the interior of a traditional sailing ship with wood panelled walls adorned with artefacts of life at sea in days of yore. In addition, various photographs and paintings portray a history of island life from days past up to the present day.

The lounge area is tastefully carpeted combining traditional stone and wood panelling providing a warm ambience for where meals can be enjoyed in the pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.

When fair weather prevails the lovely landscaped beer garden always proves a magnet for those seeking the outdoor air. The garden sits in a very sheltered sunny position and with seating for around 72 people it has become an extremely popular area in summer months enabling customers to enjoy the warmth of sun away from the sea breezes. Well-behaved dogs are welcome in our beer garden. However, dogs and other pets are not permitted in the guest rooms.

For those that want longer periods on the island the inn offers accommodation to a very high standard with en suite facilities in all bedrooms.

The Ship Inn has featured on a number of television programmes, namely ITV's "Diary of An Island", BBC 2 "Working Lunch", BBC drama "Cold Feet", BBC Holiday programme featuring the 100 Kilometre St. Cuthbert's walk from Melrose with walkers receiving a warm welcome at The Ship Inn. Newspaper reviews have also featured in The Sunday Times, Mail on Sunday and Sunday Mirror.
